The film made its
debut in India
almost simultaneously in the West in the late nineteenth century. The first
feature film was shot in 1913; it is a great mythological fresco on an episode
of the Mahabharata. The movie evolves progressively, until the 1950s that began
to emerge a new kind of movies "Film
City " in the studios of Mumbai (Bombay ), between
traditional theme, dance and music. The sixties genre, which makes its appearance
between 1960 and 1970, significantly influences the Indian filmmakers of the
time, rather calm and inspired with sweet melody movies, we go to movies action
against a more disco dance music ... Almost ! Traditional tabla, sitar and
other tampuras (classical music instruments of India ) were added symphonies with
languid violins, electric guitars, and why not banjos or accordions ... The
"masala movies" were born. They take their name from the mixture of
spices used in Indian cooking.
In fifty years, the tastes
of Indian audiences have evolved considerably. Least in terms of plot, which
remains in the same style (we'll talk), in terms of actors. Masala movies,
their beginnings were indeed appearing characters whose physical met a certain
standard. The canons of beauty were the very specific time: the men were to be
... men, real, tattooed, the hairy. The perfect hero had well packed thirties
of love handles to make pale Paul-Loup Sulitzer before his regime, and a
mustache included, making Magnum a small player.
Over time,
globalization and helping the Hero emaciated, pale a bit (yes tanning, it's
vulgar) and shaves her beautiful face fleece. So today, we see bloom on Indian
screens more universal stars - that will appeal to both young Indian, as
Norwegian or Italian. Thin, muscular and flexible (it is important for the
choreography!). Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Hritik Roshan are of them. As
for the actresses, they have changed much less over time. They are naive and
somewhat plump, very nice in general ... The pure and sometimes cutesy look
like a Sulpician image sometimes naughty and playful. The most famous today are
including Kajol, Aishwarya Rai (former Miss World) and Karisma Kapoor.
The characters of Hindi Films India are also endowed with
exceptional voice, when suddenly they began to sing. Actually, it is not the
voice actors, but it is not what matters ... What is important to the public,
it is alchemy, the judicious choice of the director who has elected the voice
for this face. With an untrained ear, it seems that it is always the same
doublers, which is not entirely false ... Asha Bhosle, for example, has doubled
over a thousand of its roles shrill, nasal voice, it is the same for the lovely
Udit Narayan whose timbre is often associated with the pouting lips of Aamir
Khan.
A tasty mixture
What makes the
success and popularity of a Hindi film is its composition, the scholar of each
of its ingredients dosage. Of course, the plot matters, but it is not
everything. If lack essential components, the film can be a total flop with the
public! First and foremost, you need a love story (complicated by social
problems such as the difference of caste or religion), decorated with a touch
of eroticism disguised between a beautiful girl and a handsome hero -
misunderstood, if possible. In addition, we need a political imbroglio or
police, suspense and punctuated by fights muscular ... and music scene! Even if
they have no dramatic interest, it takes (at least six per film). That's when
we see the wicked waving their pool nodding the head, or the police be break
dancers in their precinct. Say a little levity does not hurt in those movies
where the nerves of spectators are put to the test! ... Needless to say, it is
imperative that the film ends well. We do not just spend three hours in the
cinema to start crying! Cinema in India has primarily an entertaining
function in Pascal's sense. We must spend time and take his mind for a few
hours from the harsh realities of life. And God knows if these are harsh
realities in India !
